Winged Colleen Houser 9781482534603 Books
This is a fantasy novel following the character, Friedel, who is a tough teen whose violent tendencies wind up getting her killed. Instead of going to heaven or hell, she finds herself in the hall of the Winged. After training, these people merge with souls of various winged creatures- fairies, angels, dragons, etc - and a large portion of the novel is learning what each can do, which makes sense since it sets up a series of novels. This was probably the most fun I've had with a book all year. It's quick and easy to read, and really easy to get into. The whole time I was reading it, I was wondering where it was going to go, how it all was going to play out in the end, especially considering the twists that occur near the end.
There were a few times when I thought the dialogue was a little too on the nose, but for the most part, it felt pretty natural. The ending, while fitting, felt a little rushed compared to the general pace of the rest of the book, but on the other hand it did highlight how quickly the events unfolded.
I'll definitely pick up the next book to see where it goes, though you can easily read this book as a standalone and have a complete and satisfying ending, which I really appreciate as well!

Winged Colleen Houser 9781482534603 Books Reviews
Engaging, imaginative YA fantasy! Houser has spun a world unlike any I've seen, with refreshingly novel interpretations of mythology from around the world, and her richness of details and characters reminded me of Taylor's "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" trilogy. The moment you finish, you'll want to return!
I don't read fantasy. Fifty Shades of Grey was the only "self-published" novel I've ever read. So when I met Colleen and she told me about her novels, I was extremely skeptical. I finally got around to picking up the book & I was super surprised at how enjoyable of a read it was.
For starters, Colleen is hilarious. Her characters are sassy, snarky, and sarcastic. They're also creative and three dimensional. Colleen introduces characters with diverse traits that we all encounter every day, but you almost never see in a book, like being extremely socially awkward or totally lost in your own head.
Colleen is also, simply put, a great writer. She's succinct, clear, and smart. It's easy to take that for granted when you're reading books that are traditionally published, but harder to know what to expect with a self-published books. However, I thought the caliber of Colleen's writing was up to snuff with nearly any traditionally published book I've read (and that's a lot).
The book isn't perfect. There were a couple of times I had to go back and reread small sections because they went just a little too fast & I had trouble understanding the action. However, the story & world that the author has imagined transcends all of this. It's really her characters that bring it to life & let you suspend reality. On the whole, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind who loves a good story, it won't let you down.
I am generally not a huge fan of most fantasy, so I was pleasantly surprised when Colleen Houser's Winged drew me in right away. This story follows the afterlife of Friedel, a not-so-perfect protagonist with skeletons in her closet. Friedel's story takes place in the world of the Winged, a place where common, divine, and fantasy elements combine to form a unique team of creatures destined to protect and guide humanity. To become Winged, each candidate must shed the weight of her (or his) life and leap from a high mountain to be saved by a spirit. Shedding the weight of the past is something that many human beings struggle with on a daily basis, so Friedel's struggle is easy to relate to. So many of us have done things we aren't proud of; things that, depending on what we believe, we fear may follow us into our own afterlives. That isn't an option for Friedel. To carry the weight over the edge puts her soul on the line. She must face her past, work through it, and let it go.
One thing I noticed about this author's style is that she doesn't go overboard in her descriptions. Part of the joy of reading is letting your mind's eye take over; it's difficult to do that when you have a description down to the tiniest detail getting in your way and reprogramming things as they're imagined. There is none of that in this book. She gives you enough to go on, but stops in time to let your imagination take the reigns. That's a rare treat, particularly in fantasy novels with such beautiful and powerful creatures in it. Imagery of battles between Demon Winged and the Dragon and Phoenix Winged is intense without being overly dramatic, as are most displays of power from any of the Winged. Subtlety is definitely a strong point here, as is the creation of a different world just beyond the veil.
Overall, the experience of reading this book was a great one. If you're considering reading it, you will not be disappointed.
I want to start by saying that I am not actually a fan of "Fantasy" books. I’m really more of a non-fiction person. Fantasy stories just don't normally hold my attention long enough to even finish the book. Wingéd is definitely the exception though. Yes, the storyline is easily addicting but more importantly It is very well-written. The writing style captured my attention and drew me into the story... so it was very difficult to put down at times! I have the author to thank for some rough mornings following a few glued-to-the-book late nighters. The characters all have real depth and very well-established back-stories and I love that it takes place in the modern word (as opposed to "ancient times" or the "space age future" which I always have trouble relating to). The story is a new concept too... which I won't go into detail about here. No spoilers!!! But I found it refreshing and engaging. I highly recommend giving this one a read. I look forward to restocking my coffee supply (so I can survive several more bibliophile “morning afters”) and check out the sequel books by Colleen Houser too.
Disclaimer I was given the above product to facilitate the review. However, this did not sway my opinion in any way.
