First published in 1988, and set in Montana in the late 1800s, CAPTURE THE SUN was unique because it involved a half-breed Cheyenne hero who had been well educated in the finest Eastern schools. Hawk Sinclair straddled two worlds, not feeling at home in either, until he found his destiny in the arms of a redheaded beauty from St. Louis he called Firehair.Carrie Patterson was raised in St. Louis and had loving parents until they died and she was forced to live with her aunt and uncle and treated more like a servant. Her aunt resented her beauty for her daughters paled in comparison. When Carrie turns 18, her aunt buys Carrie's fiancé for one of the plain daughters and Carrie is forced to marry the aunt's cousin, a cruel old rancher named Noah Sinclair. He takes her to his ranch in Montana, the Circle S, where she learns he's had two wives before her, including his first who was a beautiful Cheyenne girl who gave him his only son, Hawk Sinclair, an educated half breed who will never inherit the ranch if Carrie gives him a white heir. Carrie comes to hate Noah even as she is falling in love with his son, Hawk.
My first reaction to the story was one of revulsion as the beautiful young heroine, Carrie Patterson, was forced into marrying despicable Noah Sinclair. Noah's frequent, mechanical and brutal exercise of his "marital rights" made me cringe. He was the wrong man for the right woman; he took her innocence and I hated him for it. Carrie was a bit disappointing at first as she resigned herself to the role of broodmare. But as she becomes more familiar with life on the Montana frontier, she gains strength and the respect of all around her.
I have become a huge fan of Shirl Henke. She serves up richly detailed Western romances that will keep you up late at night, I promise. This is another winning tale of hers from the old West with an intricate plot reflecting thorough research. The story captivated me from the beginning; I couldn't put it down. Her pictures of ranch life and the challenges of the Cheyenne as the white man encroached onto their way of life are vividly detailed. Her dialog is rich, capturing the personalities of her characters, even their speech, which varies from the wise Cheyenne chief, to the old Texas cowhand, to the self-righteous citizens who were so quick to judge. I highly recommend this one! It's the first in the Cheyenne trilogy:

I think this really could have been a good book. The problems I have with this book are numerous, but I will list the top five.
1) WAY too many prostitutes (that may have been okay for the lead character we want to hate, but NOT for the one we want to love - the MAIN character)
2) Too much unnecessary drama and misunderstanding between the two main characters (I mean TOO much)
3) Too much emphasis on age differences with four of the characters
4) Too long
5) It appears the author has no problem with the males sleeping with 100 different women but in Cheyenne culture it is considered dishonorable, so the main character uses the fact that he is half white to sleep with whores (??)
Not to mention the dirty fact that Marah's house was desecrated towards the end and I just can not see any woman doing what Carrie did about it (cleaning, etc.).
Not my cup of tea.
I usually choose my books to read by the picture on the front cover and the short description of the story. I wasn't wrong with this one. It held my interest to the last word and had lots of action , a good plot and story line, with a happy ending. I'd recommend this novel to all who enjoys a good sensual romance.
Very, very good. Enjoyed the story and look forward to many more by this author.
I enjoy reading Indian and old West stories. So many of these 'fiction'
still give humaness to Indians that obviously the white settlers did not
see them as anything but savages. I am a firm believer that even today
if you treat someone badly, they will usually react in same manner. Shirl
shows that if you treat them fairly, they were friendly.
It's hard to give this a better rating when Hawk keeps company with harlots when he is supposedly so in love with Carrie. I like these 1800 books because there tend be more morals than todays, but overall it was a good story.
Lately, all the Native American books start differently and end the same. With this book Shirl Henke wrote an original story and followed it until the very end. I am going to give you my comments on the book itself not the story because the story was already described by another reader. Thank you for saving me the time. This book was well written and has such a thorough completion of the lives and faults of all the characters that I was fascinated with all of them from the lives of the babes to the prostitutes. The book will not engage all your senses (laughter, compassion, etc., but it will fulfill your need to sit and relax and concentrate on the story while you get from one character to the next.
This is a complete wonderful story of innocence, love, mistrust, human nature and, most of all, what life is made up of - GREED. Thank you Shirl Henke for this exceptional book. I have come a long way reading your books - I went from a naive Native American reader to a matured commentator. God Bless your mind and penmanship.
I loved this book. I ordered this book, because it looked good and well as the review made it sound good. It is awesome. I couldn't put it down. I will order other of her books. This is a love story about a nineteen year old girl that had to marry a fifty-five year old wealthy man. He didn't this girl to much about his lifestyle other then he was wealthy and that if she gave him a son, they would be very wealthy when he died. He never told her that he had a son that was a half breed. The man that the girl marries turns out mean. His son comes and baits both of them especial his father. He does it because he knows that he is going to get he wealth when his father dies, because of him being half Indian. This son and the girl fall in love and a lot of things happen it. It was funny, it made me cry as well as there was a lot of romance.
