WHITE BOY SHUFFLE - Paul BeattyPaul Beatty’s debut novel takes no prisoners with his irreverent, unapologetic tale about Gunnar Kaufman, a young, teenage black surfer relocated from predominantly white Santa Monica to urban Los Angeles. Beatty turns race relations upside down as Gunnar has to unlearn the mannerisms of his white friends while figuring out how to navigate his way in a predominantly black world. Initially shocked by his change in surroundings, in time Gunnar adapts and learns to thrive in his new city landscape. His heightened physical and mental skill set find both an outlet and a fan base as Gunnar becomes a discomfited basketball star and a reluctant spokesperson for race relations. Feeling no need for the appearances of fealty to any given group, Gunnar offers up the fiercest loyalty only to his coterie of friends and family. Any person or organization attempting to utilize Gunnar’s voice to promote their own agenda often finds themselves on the receiving end of a withering attack by Gunnar’s sharp intellect. With a Man Booker prize in his future for The Sellout (2016), the seeds of Paul Beatty’s literary success are clearly visible with his odd, deeply satisfying rookie foray into the world of fiction.

This book is HILARIOUSLY satirical! Paul Beatty is a master.
Funniest book I’ve ever read! Also really insightful.
Smartass writer. Some trenchant satire. Hits and misses. Contrived. Goes nowhere in the end. Still a worthwhile read.
I had never read Paul Beatty before and this was eye-opening. White boy shuffle is a wonderful story even more wonderfully narrated in poetic rhetoric comedic madness, poli- lingual to boot. The many voices tell their piece in their own tone, metric, vernacular. A joy to read.
There's almost nothing to criticize about this book. The characters are well developed, the story is engaging, and the writing is terrific. It is both light-hearted and deeply sad, laugh-out-loud funny and darkly satirical. I haven't read any of Beatty's other books, but I plan to now.
This was not want I expected . The commentary on the plight of young Black man on America was told in a way that was humorous yet profound. It kept me engaged and the intellectual locution was thought provoking. I recommend this book.
Loved this book. It was a little slower getting started but around 2/3 of the way through I was devouring it and had this feeling where I knew I was reading something special. It was beautifully written; I'd come across a sentence and want to read it again aloud because the words felt good in my mouth. It has incredibly moving parts and I thought it was masterfully done. I have been recommending this book to everyone.
