I truly enjoyed this read! It had all the great makings of a tremendous novel- an interesting time period, a highly unknown scientific element, terrific characters, and great settings! This book has a great mystery in it, a passion of interest, and a very strong female lead.
Jenny Bennett had a rough childhood that makes it hard for her to trust. It also made her just plain tough, which was to her benefit most of the time.
Ryan is a bit of a mystery, but he brings in a lovely character who stole my heart.
This was a great read with real life grit, determined and fascinating characters, and a totally different time period and plot that was fascinating. This book really had several elements that made it different from other reads in this genre. This is a book definitely destined for the forever shelves!
I did receive a book from the publisher, but I had already purchased the read so that one will get passed on. Elizabeth Camden has become a must buy author for this reader!

I couldn't quite decide how I wanted to rate this book, because I just don't like Ryan very much. But then I realized he's not the "perfect" hero in a romance book. He's flawed and irritating(!), like all of us in real life. And when it comes down to it, we all have to decide whether or not we will accept the negatives along with the positives a person brings into our life. I loved Jenny. She's a strong character - almost too strong for Ryan. And Finn - I hope Ms. Camden writes a book for him as he was my absolute favorite character. The pearl industry was fascinating, and the epilogue wrapped the story up in a satisfying way. It was a bit of a slow start, but the story does pick up.
I really like Mrs Camden books, she uniquely in her books and her stories are so we develop that you suffer with characters all their faults and issues. The story is about a relationship between two people different each other. Her name is Jenny and his name is Ryan, she is a nurse working in San Francisco in the Spanish-American war. Ryan is a naval or sailor it is difficult to explains his postition in the navy but eventually the story revealed his mission will be show. Both fall in love , the point he was born in Japan from missionaries parents but he consider America his country. He came back to USA and when he told Jenny that he will go back to Japan and he will be back and marry her. Well the problem she received a letter when he explains that he going to stay in Japan and she is free to pursuit her life. The hurt is great affected her that when he came back is with a daughter and married but his wife was dead. I do not wants spoilers but I recommend this authors books. You will not be desapointed.
Lt. Ryan Gallager disappeared from nurse Jenny Bennet's life six years ago, breaking her heart in the process. When he reappears with a four-year-old daughter in tow but without a good explanation, she wants nothing to do with him. But Ryan wasn't allowed to tell anyone what he had been doing. And now he needed her help. But would time spent together allow them to rekindle what they once had, or would it finally end any chance they had to be together?
There were quite a few times I had to fight a lump in my throat while reading this book. The separation and reunification of Jenny and Ryan was particularly difficult to read about and the struggle between them incredibly authentic. It was a heart-wrenching thing, watching Jenny, with her deep need to be able to trust, try to love Ryan, who had been trained by his upbringing and required by his country to keep things hidden. It is rare to find a book that treats both sides in a conflicted relationship so well, and I longed for a happy ending for both of them.
The information about the pearls was fascinating and the perfect metaphor for both characters. But what touched me even more, was the information about apologies and forgiveness. If only we would be so gracious as Christians as the traditions described in this book are.
Elizabeth Camden is a gifted writer and her words flow. There's never a time where something draws you out of the story, each page feels like it belongs, each character fits. I adored little Lily, and I would love to what comes of Finn in a future book.
But what made this book for me was the theme. This story was about forgiveness, and it was on almost every page, but not in a way that was preachy or overdone. It was in the choices and consequences of each of the characters, as it so often is in life. It made me look at my own life and attitudes about forgiveness, which is the best any book can do, I think.
This was a poignant yet hopeful story of love, betrayal, and forgiveness I won't soon forget. I highly recommend it.
We are great fans of Camden's books but I have to agree with the other 2-star reviews here; this just wasn't her best. I was skeptical at the beginning to even purchase this one for our library after reading the reviews, but many of us have loved her other books so I took the chance. I won't repeat the other criticisms which are pretty spot on, but would like to throw in my "2 cents."
My biggest disappointment with this particular story was the missed opportunity it represents. There appears to be two kinds of "Christian Fiction" these days. One is simply a good clean story where the characters happen to be Christians but their faith isn't a main part of the story. The second kind is the type that reaches in and touches your heart, moves you, and uplifts your soul because of the characters' trials and their ultimate dependence on Christ to see them through those trials. We identify with a character and/or part of what they're going through and seek to draw closer to Jesus through the story. Unfortunately, this Camden book is the former and we were hoping for the latter. And sadly, this is not the only Christian author that has strayed this direction over the past years. It was still a good story although with some weaker than normal characters. We can only hope that this was just a small blip, and Ms. Camden will be back to bringing us more fantastic historical stories and characters of the second kind in the near future!
